32-560DCCS CLASS A1 60117 BRITISH RAILWAYS APPLE GREEN WITH DCC SOUND, LAMPS, FIREBOX AND CREW. BRIEF HISTORY OF THE LOCOMOTIVE. The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) Peppercorn Class A1 is a type of express passenger steam locomotive.
Forty-nine original Peppercorn Class A1s were built to the design of Arthur Peppercorn who was the last Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) of the LNER during the early British Railways era, but all were scrapped with the discontinuation of steam, with none of the original production run surviving into preservation. In 2008, a brand new 50th Peppercorn A1 locomotive, 60163 Tornado, was completed. Most of the former LNER Class A1 locomotives designed by Sir Nigel Gresley had been rebuilt as LNER Class A3 locomotives prior to this class being conceived. The few straggling LNER Class A1 locomotives that remained unrebuilt during the tenure of Peppercorn's predecessor, Edward Thompson, were redesignated by him as Class A10s in preparation for the construction of his new Class A1 locomotives.Thompson rebuilt the pioneer LNER Pacific Great Northern in 1945; originally this was the new Class A1, but the rebuild was not repeated. Instead, initiated by Thompson but largely taken forward by his successor Arthur Peppercorn, Great Northern was designated Class A1/1, and a new class of Peppercorn A1s ordered.
The locomotives were designed to cope with the heaviest passenger trains in the post-war period on the East Coast Main Line (London - York - Newcastle - Edinburgh - Aberdeen) which consisted normally of trains with up to 15 coaches and up to 550 tons. The Peppercorn A1s were able to pull such a train on the flat at a speed of 60-70 mph (95-110 km/h).
The class used a double Kylchap chimney system and, like previous LNER Pacifics, had a 3-cylinder arrangement. FULL DCC SOUND CONVERSION OF BRAND NEW 32-560DCCS CLASS A1 60117 BRITISH RAILWAYS APPLE GREEN BY CR SIGNALS. WORKING LED LIGHTS, INCLUDING LAMPS AND FIREBOX. SOUND USING A LOKSOUND V4 WITH FILE PROVIDED BY BR SOUNDS. PLASTIC COAL LOAD REMOVED (BUT INCLUDED IN THE BOX) AND REPLACED WITH A HALF LOAD OF "REAL" COAL.Front Oil Lamps (Class A) and Rear Lamp. Rear Lamp deactivated with F16. The locomotive will start to push a wagon, coach, etc a short distance at approximately 15 mph scale speed, before returning to its original position. For use with automatic uncoupling track sections, magnets etc. (CV 246 = 30, CV 247 = 60, CV 248 = 60).
A replacement for the Dynamic Braking as seen on CR Signals locomotives fitted with the LokSound V4. Service Brake is your standard brake mode, and will decrease the stopping time by approximately 70%, giving the user more control over deceleration. Activating the Service Brake will also start to steadily reduce and limit the speed of the locomotive to approximately 45mph (about half the top speed), giving the user the ability to "Cruise" the locomotive at a steady pace, without adjusting the throttle e.
On the approach to the station or junction, you can leave the throttle wide open, and activate F5, the locomotive will start to slow through the station, once the locomotive has cleared the station you can deactivate F5, and the locomotive will start to power away. Shovelling & Firebox Glow (If Fitted). Reduces the braking distance by 32% and limits the top speed to approximately 30mph.
For more control of speed, in and around stations. Can be used with F5 for increased braking. Rear Light On / Off (If Fitted). Front Oil Lamp (Class J) and Rear Lamp.Front Oil Lamp (Class K) and Rear Lamp. Light Engine / Heavy Train Modes.
With F22 switched off (the default setting) the locomotive will behave as if it is running without load (Light Engine), quickly accelerating away and stopping in much shorter distances. Activating F22 will switch the Locomotive into Heavy Train Mode, greatly increasing the acceleration times, and simulating the amount of power the engine needs when accelerating. Increase the stopping distances of the locomotive, when compared to Light Engine.
Referred to as "Optional" and "Primary" load by ESU. Reduces the braking distance by 16% and limits the top to approximately 15mph. For more control of speed, in and around yards.
