Having replaced the Western region Hydraulics the locos were all given names after Warships, continueing a western region tradition, the first named being ArkRoyal in January 1978. G Waterloo to Exeter, Paddington to Birmingham, and Bristol. To improve reliability the fleet was refurbished at Doncaster works betwean 1979 and 1984, by 1987 the class was deemed non standard and withdrawals commenced with 50011 going to Crewe works to act as a test bed for overhauled power units, the run down was relatively swift with only 8 left in service by 1992. 50042 entered traffic with BR as D442 in 1968, initially allocated to Stoke.

The loco became 50042 in 1973 prior to transfer to the Western Region in 1974 when it went to Bristol Bath Road. The loco was named Triumph in 1978 at Bristol.
